In a difficult economic environment for European tobacco growers, marked in particular by the phase out of subsidies under the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy, a new proposal from the World Health Organization (WHO), if adopted by the signatories to the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), would be the final blow for 70,000 European farmers who grow Burley and Oriental tobacco varieties.

A well balanced new EU Tobacco Products Directive is needed which takes in account health, employment and budgetary considerations. Also a new EU position is required for the amendment of the Framework Convention of Tobacco Control. These are the main messages of the meeting on the future of the European tobacco growing, hosted by AGRI Member of the European Parliament Mr. Csaba Tabajdi in Brussels on June 29.
