Aphids

aphidsThe main specie of aphids affecting tobacco is Myzus persicae. This pest  concerns both seedbed and the field.

During the 2 to 3 months after transplanting, tobacco plant is very attractive for aphids. This piercing-sucking insects feed on sap and expell a sticky material called "honeydew". As it is very rich in carbohydrates, sooty mold may develop on Honeydew. These black fungi render the tobacco leaves unmarketable.

Furthermore, aphids are a vector of several plant viruses, such as PVY and CMV for example...
