Sofia. Bulgarian tobacco growers will support the party that will protect their interests and assist tobacco growers in Bulgaria, National Association of Tobacco Growers Chairman Tsvetan Filev said in an interview with FOCUS News Agency.
The thrips species affecting the tobacco crop are Thrips tabaci and Frankliniella occidentalis.
Thrips feed by puncturing cells of the leaves and by sucking their contents. These cells lose their normal colour. Dried leaves will then have a yellowish to silvery appearance, causing losses on the commercial value of the tobacco.
Besides direct damage caused by feeding, this pest is also an important vector of viruses, especially Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus (TSWV).
