Sclerotinia rot

Sclerotinia rotSclerotinia rot is caused by the fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and colonizes mainly the stem and the leaves.

The incidence of this disease can increase rapidly especially if tobacco is grown in areas where winter rape or sunflowers are cultivated (both crops are sensitive to the pathogen) and bacause rotation intervals are often shortening. The disease may appear at any growth stage, under moist conditions.

The damage in the field can be very important if climatic conditions are humid at the end of the summer. Losses during curing period only concern air-cured tobaccos, which curing duration and specific conditions are favourable to the development of the fungus (high hygrometry and medium temperatures).
