Flue-Cured, Burley and Dark air-cured varieties

Flue-cured, Burley and Dark air-cured varieties in Europe

INTRODUCTION TO THE TOBACCO VARIETY CATALOGUE

The purpose of compiling a catalogue of European tobacco varieties is to

  • get an overview, which varieties are cultivated in Europe
  • provide the tobacco producers with an updated and comprehensive list of tobacco varieties available for use
  • provide the customers (leaf dealers, tobacco industry) with the same information
  • give every tobacco breeder in Europe an opportunity to have their output known to their colleagues and thus provide another useful channel of information exchange

The catalogue is covering all tobacco types, which are under cultivation in Europe, i.e. Flue Cured, Burley, Dark Air Cured, Fire Cured and Oriental. Every tobacco breeder in Europe, as well as all people who are engaged in tobacco cultivation, either corporate or physical persons, are invited to participate in the project. The breeder should have a legal title to the variety he proposes to be included in the catalogue and the variety should not be a breeding line or an experimental hybrid but have already at least some record of commercial production. For varieties, not bred in Europe, the proposing person should provide as far as possible information and data resulting from field trials. In order to make the catalogue as informative as possible and the information contained therein mutually comparable a standardized sheet has been prepared which contains fields to be filled in by the breeder and other proposing persons. The legends and explanations can be found bellow the tables.

LEGEND

Variety name: name under which the variety is known and distributed among growers or under which it is included in the exclusive rights register

In the field immediately below one of the following categories should be used to describe the variety: self-fertile inbred variety, cms inbred variety, F1 hybrid, multiple hybrid, other if appropriate

Origin:

Name of the country where the cultivar was bred or is being maintained

Breeder:

Name of person or organization that breeds or maintains the variety

Contact:

Website or e-mail of the breeder

Type:

Classification according to curing method and intended use: flue-cured, burley, dark air-cured, fire-cured, oriental sun-cured

Description:

This part should include a brief agronomic description of the variety including growth rate (slow/fast growing), number of usable leaves, earliness (early/medium/late flowering, early/medium/late maturing), yielding potential, curability and quality of cured leaf, and other characteristic features of the variety which the breeder deems important. Since many of agronomic characters tend to vary from environment to environment absolute values should be avoided and relative qualifiers (high, medium, low etc.) should be used instead.

Picture:

The breeder is encouraged to paste a photo of the variety, preferably featuring a single plant rather than a general field view and in internet-ready size

Resistances and susceptibilities:

This table describes the response of the variety to major tobacco diseases/pests. Where full or near-full vertical resistance is deployed (black root rot, PVY, TMV) the response of the variety should be given as resistant (R) or susceptible (S). Where only partial/horizontal resistance is available the response can be graded as moderately resistant (MR), moderately tolerant (MT), susceptible (S). Cases of extreme or notorious susceptibility should be signaled as very susceptible (VS).

Ce

Data of commercial production:

This table is divided in three columns, include:  the name of country, precise or estimated acreage under the variety for each country in which the variety is grown, and percentage of the total area cropped to tobacco occupied by the variety. As those data are not always directly available to the breeder, estimations can be inferred e.g. from the amount of seeds sold.

Agronomical and chemical data:

The table contains agrotechnical and chemical data of the variety. The second and third column of the table show the variety data compared to local and AERET standard variety in percentage. The standards are given below the table.
